The cost of using non‑certified beacons in hazardous areas
We've seen it too many times: a chemical plant buys standard BLE beacons to track assets, ignoring the risk of a spark. One short circuit, one static discharge – and the entire facility could be at risk. The direct cost of a fire is bad enough. The indirect cost – lost production, regulatory fines, reputational damage – is catastrophic.
The OV03 is not a repurposed consumer beacon. It carries Ex ia IIC T6 Ga certification – the highest level of intrinsic safety, allowing deployment in Zone 0 hazardous areas (continuous explosive gas atmosphere). Every circuit is designed to limit stored energy so that even under fault conditions, no spark can ignite the ambient gas.
Understanding the Ex ia IIC T6 Ga rating
Ex – Complies with explosion‑proof standards (GB3836 series / IEC 60079).
ia – Intrinsically safe, the highest level of protection. Even under fault conditions, the circuit cannot ignite an explosive atmosphere. Suitable for Zone 0 (where explosive gas is continuously present).
IIC – Gas group for the most dangerous gases, including hydrogen, acetylene, and carbon disulfide. IIC is the highest protection level for gas environments.
T6 – Temperature class. Maximum surface temperature ≤85°C. T6 is the highest temperature class, suitable for gases with very low ignition temperatures.
Ga – Equipment protection level for Zone 0 (continuous hazard). Ga is the highest protection level for gas environments.
Why the ER14505 battery matters
Standard beacons use CR series coin cells. The OV03 uses a lithium‑thionyl chloride ER14505 cell – 2600mAh capacity, wide temperature tolerance (-60°C to +85°C), and ultra‑low self‑discharge (<1% per year at 25°C). At a 500ms broadcast interval with 0dBm TX power, you get 5+ years of continuous operation. For low‑frequency applications (e.g., 2‑5 second intervals), expect 7–10 years on a single battery.

What the OV03 is NOT (honest limitations)
Not a GPS tracker – This is a broadcast‑only beacon. It does not contain GPS, cellular, or WiFi. It advertises BLE signals for gateways or readers.
Not rechargeable – The ER14505 cell is a primary (non‑rechargeable) lithium battery. Do not attempt to recharge it.
No two‑way communication – Transmit‑only beacon. Configuration is done via a separate programming device over BLE.
Certification applies to the complete device – Any modification to the housing, antenna, or battery type will void the explosion‑proof certification. Do not open or modify the device.
Range is line‑of‑sight – 100m range only in open outdoor areas. Metal structures, concrete walls, and dense industrial equipment will significantly reduce effective range.
Not a replacement for ATEX/IECEx certification outside China – The Ex ia IIC T6 Ga certification follows GB3836 (Chinese national standard), which aligns with IECEx. For international projects, we can provide IECEx or ATEX documentation on request.
